A faulty fuel pump is easy to diagnose with a quick fuel pressure test. However, if you don’t have a fuel pressure test gauge you can usually spot a bad fuel pump by the following symptoms: Engine cranks but does not start, engine backfires, engine stops running when hot, if the fuel pump cannot be heard when the key is cycled to the on position, abnormally low idle and poor engine performance. If your motorcycle cranks but will not start you can try spraying aerosolized fuel in through the intake and cranking the engine. We prefer to use non-chlorinated carburetor cleaner because it is less likely to deform rubber diaphragms and seals. This particular bike had many of these symptoms but most noticeably backfiring, The engine turned over but would not start, and if it did run the idle was low and erratic.
